Concerning the great outbreak of smallpox that occurred in Florence.
In the said year and summer, there was in Florence a great outbreak of the disease of Variola, by which all the children of Florence and the surrounding countryside were marked in various ways; and because of this illness, more than three thousand died in Florence, both male and female. It was said by certain astrologers and natural philosophers that the cause was the conjunction of Mars and Saturn in the sign of Libra, and Jupiter being then in opposition in Aries.
